Day 39 (7/4): Miles traveled: ~ 215

Location: Eugene, OR train station, Netarts Bay RV Park

Science: air quality measurements (both particulate counter and MicroTops measurements) at Eugene OR train station (parking lot), Netarts Bay RV Park (right on the Bay). There weren't many fires that night. The Bay was low tide until about 7pm PST that night -- tons of seals on the mud/sand flats. The weather was cloudy, but there were purportedly fireworks North of our campsite, probably between 9 and 10pm.

Today Rosie and I headed to Eugene to pick up my friend and colleague Beate Liepert, who is a (well-known) climate scientist I first met at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory when I was in graduate school. Our research has interesting overlaps (she studies aerosols and global dimming) and we were meeting up to combine her fancy MicroTops Sun Photometer with my air quality sampler to get measurements that reached from ground-level to the sun.

This would allow us to measure aerosols particularly from the wildfires that might not be reaching ground-level but were traveling overhead all the same.

Our first stop was in the Eugene, OR train station parking lot.

We of course got some coffee at the nearest cafe (it's OR, that's what you do) --

Then we picked up Beate and drove to Netarts Bay RV Park on the OR coast.

Once we were settled, Rosie soon had Beate using her NASA GISS skills to construct our Ladder Ball set -- they were chatting non-stop about aerodynamics and the uselessness of instructions when you could just figure things out yourself.......

After I finally read the actual Ladder Ball instructions (I can't help it!), there were a few adjustments to be made.....:)......
